YouTube Music gains Global Charts and now allows you to cast uploaded music without a subscription

If you’ve wondered what the most popular song is in South Africa right now, you can easily find out thanks to the addition of the Global Charts feature in the Explore tab on YouTube Music, and if that wasn’t a useful enough addition, non-subscribers can now cast their uploaded music to smart speakers and even ask Google Assistant to play their custom playlists.

That’s right, you no longer need to be a YouTube Premium subscriber to cast your uploaded music to your Nest Mini or Nest Hub, and you can even tell Google Assistant to begin streaming your personal playlists. These two new features are likely to be the most interesting to YouTube Music users, with the new casting ability likely to result in a few users hitting the cancel button on their subscription plans.

Coming back to the new Global Charts feature, you can tap on the Explore Tab and navigate the ‘The Charts’ section to browse the most popular music from 57 countries and check out the following:

Top songs

  • The most played songs on YouTube

Top music videos

  • The most viewed music videos

Top artists

  • The biggest artists on YouTube

Genres

  • The top videos across the major genres on YouTube

Trending

  • What’s new and hot in music right now

With Google Play Music on the fast road to oblivion, YouTube Music is finally picking up some much-needed features to make it a more palatable option for GPM users switching over.
